Position Overview

The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Associate - Electrochemistry, Fuel Cells. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate will carry out advanced research in the area of nanofilters, fuel cells and related applications using nanoporous carbons. This work will build upon the group's previous experience and expertise. The approaches, reactions and instruments used in this work are generally well-established in the group, although creativity and technical skills/know-how in terms of solving new problems as they arise will be needed. The work will also involve providing guidance and assistance to graduate and undergraduate students, as well as overseeing safety issues in the experimental set-up.

The key function of this position is to fabrication specialized materials, design and construct experiments, interpret the chemical and electrochemical data collected and modify the work plan to meet project goals.  In the process of coordinating this project, the incumbent will provide guidance and advice to others working on this and related research projects.  Written and oral reports and presentations, e.g. Power Point, will be required. This position also requires relatively frequent interaction with key sponsors.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):


  • Set up and carry out nanoporous carbon film fabrication, and employ these films in fuel cell and other applications
  • Collect and interpret research data in a rigorous, safe and productive manner
  • Provide advice and guidance to students and other lab personnel working on the same or related research projects

Reporting & Publications:

  • Maintain laboratory notebooks in a timely and accurate manner
  • Ensure that the supervisor and project team are kept informed of activities and progress of work
  • Support the Research Supervisor by performing literature review, writing reports that meet publication standards and ensuring awareness of technical progress found throughout the world
  • Conduct regular oral and Power Point presentations on results obtained and write project reports as required by the Supervisor

Safety and Environment:

  • Responsible for the reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
  • Ensure that all required safety procedures are followed when carrying out tasks
  • Interact with co-workers, supervisor and members of the University community in a pleasant and respectful manner
  • Manage own time effectively to accomplish tasks
  • Ensure that equipment and work spaces are maintained in good order
  • Maintain a safe, courteous and professional working environment

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • MSc in Chemistry or related Engineering disciplines is required; PhD is an asset
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in those area detailed below are required
  • Knowledge of electrochemistry, fuel cell and sensor technologies and the materials developed for those technologies
  • Strong hands-on skills and extensive knowledge of data interpretation
  • Ability to compile, draft, and maintain accurate records and reports
  • Must use innovative and creative problem solving skills to address the complexities of the research project(s) as they arise and change the methods and procedures accordingly
  • Demonstrated time management skills, including organizing workload and priority setting
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills
  • Ability to multi-task, and work both independently and within a team environment
  • Ability to stay organized and work effectively in a changing environment
  • Experience in using the suite of Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience in literature searching, including libraries, web sites and other media
  • Must demonstrate attention to detail
  • Must be flexible and perform well under tight deadlines
  • Willingness to perform any other duties associated with the research project, of an occasional nature, which may be assigned by Research Supervisor
  • Current certification in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS)
  • Full working knowledge of safety regulations
