Technician, Science Workshop, Faculty of Science

Position Overview

The Science Workshop in the Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Technician for approximately 2 months.

This position reports to the Manager, Science Workshop, and will provide technical support to faculty, staff and students for all departments within the Faculty of Science. The incumbent will be responsible for the design, construction, maintenance and repair of equipment and apparatus used in teaching and research.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for the design and fabrication of equipment for use in teaching or research laboratories
  • Ensures the repair and maintenance of equipment involved in student teaching laboratories and research projects
  • Ensures that the workshop is operated and maintained in a fully functional manner
  • Ensures equipment and machinery is maintained in a safe and operational state
  • Operation of manual, lathes, mills, grinders, and various related machines and accessories
  • Programming and operation of CNC machining centers and turning centers
  • Utilize advanced CAD software to design projects, work with CAM software to program CNC equipment for manufacturing the designed components
  • Inspection, repair and fabrication of vacuum pumps and systems
  • Maintenance, training and repair of Liquid Nitrogen storage and distribution equipment
  • Positive working relationship with faculty, support staff, undergraduate and graduate students
  • Co-operation and collaboration with other internal and external clients to establish a cohesive and informative environment
  • Work directly with clients assisting in design, development and material selection for a wide variety of projects required throughout the university

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Journeyman Machinist with an interprovincial red seal and at least five years of directly related experience
  • Extensive knowledge and application of all types of machining is required
  • A strong mechanical background with the through working knowledge in related trades including sheet metal and welding is essential
  • Thorough knowledge of materials and the characteristics of metals, plastics and composites for machining and fabrication
  • Demonstrated ability to reason and systematically troubleshoot many different types of problems is required
  • Requires strong analytical, organizational, time management and problem solving skills, while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities in an effective, efficient manner
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal), as well as strong listening skills are required
  • Must be highly goal-driven and exhibit the ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Able to work within a collaborative setting with others to set clear priorities while managing multiple timelines and objectives
  • Advanced computer skills including proficiency with the Microsoft Office, SolidWorks, Mastercam, navigating the internet, and utilizing email are also required
  • Thorough knowledge of vacuum pumps and systems
  • Thorough knowledge of Liquid Nitrogen storage and distribution equipment
  • Strong background in trade related safety and the correct use of safety procedures as they relate to the workshop and OHSA
  • Electronics knowledge would be an asset
