Position Overview

The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Assistant . This Part-time (17.5 hrs per week) Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Priorities and deadlines are set by the Principal Investigator , and the incumbent is expected to operate with a clearly defined direction to implement the solution.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform crop transformation. The incumbent will support postdoc and doctoral students to establish crop transformation procedures. They will analyze the transgenic plants using standard molecular techniques. Professional documentations are required for publication and patent filing.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Grow healthy plants suitable for transformation in greenhouse
  • Test different plant tissues for transformation efficiency
  • Document a detailed protocol for reproducible experiments
  • Prepare appropriate tissue culture medium and order necessary chemicals for tissue culture practice
  • Deposition and maintenance of Agrobacterium stocks
  • Generate 5-10 transgenic plants per each DNA construct (10 constructs)
  • Genotyping 50-100 transgenic plants by PCR
  • Regularly present data at the lab meeting

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • BSc degree (MSc preferred) in Biological Science with research experience in plant biology
  • At least one year of experience in tissue culture and plant transformation
  • Experience in developing transformation procedures of multiple crop species
  • Strong knowledge of plant biology and tissue regeneration
  • Good knowledge of basic molecular biology (PCR and DNA manipulation)
  • Good knowledge of Agrobacterium -mediated transformation procedure
  • Able to collaborate and communicate in a constructive, friendly, and open manner with other team members
  • Self-motivated, with a positive, can-do attitude
  • Willing to take on new challenges and put in the extra effort to get the job done
  • Organized and able to prioritize among a changing workload
  • Able to use time management skills to prioritize workflow to meet project deadlines
