Position Overview

The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science invites applications for two (2) Laboratory Research Associates. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Coordinator, Aquatic Ecology Lab, and will produce manuscripts for publication in scientific journals as a project deliverable under the Representative Sub-basins Study (REPS) oil sands grant proposal. Responsibilities will include processing samples, analyzing results and writing manuscripts on sediment, algal and invertebrate samples which were previously collected from tributaries of the Lower Athabasca River.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Managing time effectively to complete project work and contribute to research team objectives of producing manuscripts
  • Research scientific literature to produce manuscripts which includes: background information/introduction, methods, results and discussion/conclusion
  • In consultation and collaboration with Coordinator, produce final manuscripts detailing results of sample data analysis for publication in a scientific journal
  • Record, manage and organize all sample data as outlined in the standard operating procedure
  • Responsible for QA/QC all data before performing statistical analysis
  • Data analyses and visualization in preparation for publications (tables, figures)
  • Research and conduct appropriate statistical data analyses to be able to clearly address project objectives
  • Completing all safety training, certification courses and site training before performing laboratory work as well as maintain a clean and safe laboratory work area
  • Understand and comply with all safety regulations, codes of practice and occupational health and safety policies and procedures while working in laboratory
  • Organize, maintain and process sediment, algal and invertebrate samples according to standard operating procedures within the project deliverables timeline

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with a major in Ecology or related field required
  • Must have previous work experience in freshwater aquatic research in a laboratory setting
  • Strong time management and organizational ability
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with writing manuscripts for publication in scientific research journals
  • Ability to work collaboratively at the group and individual level is required
  • Ability to multitask with attention to detail is required
  • Knowledge of oil sands monitoring and river systems in Alberta considered an asset
  • Must be self-motivated and take initiative to meet project deliverable timelines
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
  • Experience with various laboratory procedures, statistical analysis, and data entry in Excel (or equivalent) is required
  • Applicants should have experience in some of the following laboratory procedures including: fluorometry, spectrophotometry, centrifugation, filtration, freeze drying, weighing, sediment and algal sample processing, and freshwater benthic macroinvertebrate sample processing, sorting and identification
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of statistical software (preferably R) for univariate and multivariate data analyses and evaluation is required
