Position Overview

The Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Designer. This Full-time Fixed Short Term position is for approximately 2 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Working closely with a research team the Research Designer will be proposing new designs, adjusting and working with minimal or no direction on existing designs, and fine tuning designs. This position reports to Dr. Sheelagh Carpendale, and as such, the Research Designer will work as a research designer in the Innovations in Visualization (InnoVis) research group in the Interactions Lab (iLab) at the University of Calgary.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Propose new designs that are data to visual representational mappings to the PI as required for current and upcoming projects for the Innovis research group
  • Work in both divergence and convergence design modes to explore a variety of design possibilities to ensure final design meets project requirements
  • Work on initiating, extending, or adding design features to existing designs to improve visual representation and/or satisfy new project requirements
  • Using a variety of design software such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, work with the design details such as icons, colors, layout, and general visual and spatial impact, including mapping of data to visual representations for the individual phases of the project
  • Discuss and present the choice of visual variables to the PI to be used in representations, such as the layout, color scheme, harmony of visuals, text, and icons to demonstrate how these choices meet the requirements of the project
  • Using a variety of design software, sketching, and drawing, recommend and design solutions that incorporate quality interaction attributes, to offer smooth flowing, predictable, and comprehensible interaction designs to meet social and technology requirements of the project
  • Support the Principle Investigator by ensuring PI is kept informed of the activities and progress of all projects. Work with other members of the research team to collaborate and generate design recommendations and solutions for various projects. This may include changes to existing methods, procedures, and practices currently in place for design generation.
  • Through the use of software such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, assist with publications papers and presentations for the Innovis research team. This includes design requirements such as title pages, diagrams, and page/screen layouts for papers posted to the website and presentations to faculty and external stakeholders

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in either Mechanical Engineering Design, Computer Science or equivalent is required; - minimum of 5 years of experience in professional design, a design focused research lab or design in industry is preferred; however a combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Expert in design sketching, artistic sketching, and performative sketching
  • Teaching experience in design and knowledge of international drawing standards would be considered a great asset
  • Demonstrated ability to recommend design solutions that incorporate quality attributes and meet social and technology requirements
  • Experience with InDesign, CAD, Illustrator, and Photoshop is required
  • Excellent team work skills, particularly in design, visualization and interaction design
  • Excellent verbal, written and visual communication skills
  • Resourceful, innovative, and creative problem solving abilities
  • Positive attitude and ability to work independently and part of a team is critical
