Position Overview

The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 15 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension, and will work roughly 28 hours/week.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant, assists in reaching the goals of the research.  Responsibilities will include maintaining the lab, planing, conducting, analysing and reporting on experiments and maintaining a safe work environment for the lab.  The successful candidate must be able to conduct research using state of the art molecular biology and microbiological techniques.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Works both collaboratively and independently on laboratory experiments, data analysis and data interpretation as needed
  • Conduct on-line literature searches as necessary to support scientific research activities
  • Interact with other members of the team and provide technical support and offer advice on technical lab issues as needed
  • Maintain lab notebook by tracking results and findings in accurate and timely manner
  • Provide up-to-date information on past, present and future laboratory experiments as required
  • Participate in lab meetings on an as required basis reporting on progress made, issues arising and results obtained
  • Ensure the safe and reliable operation, and proper use of all laboratory equipment

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A BSc in the Biological sciences with a speciality of Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology
  • The candidate should have at least one years experience with working with the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • The candidate should be able to work independently as well as in a team setting
  • Also required are excellent communication skills and proficiency in computer skills especially Microsoft office
