Position Overview

The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Part-time Regular Undergraduate Lab Technician.

Reporting to the Department Head and Manager, Administrative Services, this highly interactive position provides expertise for the undergraduate program in the Department of Chemistry  The successful candidate will prepare experiments for the assigned courses and be responsible for the administrative and managerial work for the labs independently. 

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Technical Operations/Maintenance/Consulting:

  • Purchasing of all supplies, parts and materials needed for the course experiments and instruments
  • Regulate expenditure within budgets of the designated laboratory courses
  • Prepare reagents/solutions and unknown samples for undergraduate teaching labs
  • Ensure that all equipment is in good working order, well before the commencement of labs
  • Be fully familiar with all of the experiments and equipment in the course
  • Assist with instrument testing and installation upon arrival of new equipment
  • Planning and development of new experiments, as required by course instructor
  • Troubleshoot equipment and experiments, as need arises.
  • Carry out lab demos for instructors during TA meetings, and assist Teaching Assistants with learning about equipment at arranged times
  • Ensure undergraduate labs are clean and tidy, all chemicals stocked up, gas cylinders sufficiently full, instruments in good working order, chart paper in place, etc.
  • Ensure that solutions are being properly stored in waste containers and ensure that the EH&S office removes these promptly
  • Ensure that all safety rules of the lab are being adhered to by both TAs and students
  • Provide assistance to TAs during running of labs in terms of providing supplies, unknowns, glassware, dealing with instrumental problems, etc.
  • Processing student result entries, establishing numerical grades and posting of these grades in a timely fashion
  • Contact course instructor immediately concerning all instrumental, experimental or student problems, associated with the laboratory component of the course
  • Prepare invoices for equipment breakage and failure to check out fees
  • Maintain and update all laboratory records

Leadership/Communication/Relationships:

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with faculty and staff in the Department as well as other units on campus
  • Manage work time efficiently and with minimal supervision
  • Manage various tasks effectively, accurately and timely
  • Responsibility is assumed for personal development and skill enhancement
  • Provide support with the Undergraduate Laboratory Technician team during periods of high workloads by sharing responsibilities and duties
  • Partake in training graduate teaching assistants
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends to ensure that the laboratories are properly prepared

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science with major in Chemistry, plus 2-3 years experience working in analytical chemistry lab
  • Thorough background in analytical and instrumental methods and techniques
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Must possess ability to demonstrate, teach and perform high precision and accuracy chemical analysis
  • Strong computer skills and demonstrated expertise in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel scientific plotting
  • Programming ability beneficial
  • Good mechanical aptitude in installation and set-up of instruments highly required
  • Full understanding of WHMIS and safety regulations for handling and disposal of chemicals
  • Highly motivated, excellent interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple tasks effectively
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to do heavy manual work (lifting up to 50 kg)
