Greenhouse Technician, Biological Sciences

Position Overview

The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Greenhouse Technician . This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Biological Sciences Department Greenhouse (BSDG) is the primary teaching and research greenhouse for the University of Calgary. It has approximately 6000 sq ft under glass.

This position regularly reports to the greenhouse manager and to the Department Manager, Technical Services as required. Knowledge of greenhouse plant care and pest management is essential. The technician supports teaching and research by successfully completing the assigned tasks. Incumbent will assume responsibility for the operation of the greenhouse when manager is off site.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Program and maintain growth chambers. BSDG has multiple types of chambers with different protocols. The technician must be competent with Johnson Controllers as well as with Conviron Chamber Programming. The technician needs to set and check specific set points and offsets for the Johnson systems. The Conviron chambers have a greater range of controls and the technician needs to set profiles for temperatures, humidity and lighting levels. These tasks are critical to ensure the experiment runs successfully
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on BSDG space and equipment. This includes sterilizing the equipment, which is critical to ensure pests, viruses, and pathogenic bacteria do not passed between plants. Sterilization techniques will include soap and water or bleach depending on types of equipment
  • Operate and maintain BSDG equipment such as soil mixers, light meters, pH meters, watering systems, coolers, fans and misters. All of these pieces of equipment need to be constantly in operation for the optimal functioning of the BSDG. Failure of the equipment will delay or potentially ruin experiments
  • Ensure all material for teaching and research labs is properly prepared from seeding through to the point needed by each user
  • Follow all SOPs for greenhouse compartments, growth chambers and incubators and works with Manager to revise as needed
  • Apply bio-control products at the direction of the BSDG Manager
  • Clean, sort, and arrange storage of BSDG supplies and materials after each experiment
  • Receive orders and materials sent to the BSDG in a timely and professional manner and incorporates the material into the existing inventory
  • Collect data from the chambers and update settings as needed according to experimental protocol

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Related post-secondary credential in Plant Biology or Horticulture/Greenhouse Operations
  • Minimum 2 years work experience
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Experience, technical background, knowledge, skills and proficiency in greenhouse/horticultural operations and use of equipment related to such operations is required
  • Familiarity with basic plant anatomy, physiology, pathology and terminology
  • Ability to interact with members of the public as well as members of the Biological Sciences in a courteous and professional manner
  • Excellent communication (written and oral), organization, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and function effectively as part of a team
  • Understanding of and ability to work using specific greenhouse operational standards
  • Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labor requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 25kg) and work on a ladder
