The Department of Computer Science under the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in Geospatial Data Processing in Digital Earth.

Job Description

The appointed Postdoctoral Fellow will be working with Dr. Faramarz Samavati, primarily on geospatial data processing techniques applicable to a Digital Earth framework in addition to various projects led by Dr. Samavati. A digital Earth framework is a multiresolution 3D model used to represent the Earth for integrating, processing and visualizing location-based data. For more information, please review Dr. Samavati’s recent publications regarding digital Earth and connectivity maps, which have been made available on his website: The position will be primarily funded by an NSERC CRD grant and existing industrial collaboration.


  • PhD in Computer Science. The applicant must have earned a doctoral degree within the past five years.
  • Research expertise and a strong technical background in large data processing, geospatial cloud-based databases, computer graphics and spatial data structures with advanced programming and software development abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • The applicant must have excellent multitasking abilities and be capable of working in a self¿directed manner within a team environment.
  • Ability to mentor undergrad and MSc students.
  • A high level of productivity for peer¿reviewed publications is expected.
